IPL, commonly known as a photofacial, uses selective wavelength of intense pulsed light (IPL) for a variety of treatments. With the option of different wavelengths, you’re able to target a specific desired outcome for many different indications.
Whether it’s dark spots close to the surface of the skin, vascular just underneath the skin, or a hair follicle, which is at the deepest wavelength, the correct setting and light filter can specifically target these concerns.
For the treatment of dark spots, the pigmentation is targeted and broken down by the light into small particles that will rise to the surface of the skin and eventually fade away.
Vascular treatments (ex: rosacea) work much in the same way. When the vessel is targeted the damaged tissues is eventually absorbed into the body and excreted naturally. During this response new cells are formed and the skin will appear clearer and refreshed.
The heat from the light also stimulates your skins repair response, which is collagen and elastin production. Giving your skin an overall rejuvenation. It’s great for correction of fine lines and evening out your skin tone and texture.
For pigmentation removal, vascular treatment, and all-around skin rejuvenation, the IPL has many amazing treatment options.
You will yield noticeable results after just one session, with virtually no downtime. Best results will be achieved with a series of 3-5 treatments 4 weeks apart.
Pre-treatment
· Avoid direct sunlight (tanning) of the treatment area for 4 weeks.
· Discontinue use of any self tanning products 2 weeks prior.
· Check with your doctor or pharmacist if any medications you’re taking will make you photosensitive (reactive to intense light). This can include herbals.
· Avoid the use of products containing hydroquinone, bleaching creams, Retin-A, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents or chemical peels 2 weeks prior.
· If you experience cold sores, talk to your doctor in advance about a pre-use medication to help avoid a possible breakout.
Post-treatment
After an IPL you may notice redness and/or darkening of pigmentation. The redness will subside within 24-48 hours of the treatment and the darkened areas will dissipate within a week or two. It’s very important that you let this happen naturally. Picking and harsh scrubbing can lead to damage and scarring.
Avoid direct sunlight and use an SPF of 30 or more. Drink plenty of water and moisturize!
